Hoole Soldier’s Death: The news has just been received by Mr and Mrs C R Johnston 13, Phillip Street Hoole of the death in action of their youngest son James (”Jim”) who was shot down while carrying supplies to Arnhem on 21st Sept 1944.He first joined up in April 1940 and was a driver in the R.A.S.C. He served in the North Africa campaign. Prior to D-Day he remustered to the Airborne troops, in which capacity he went on a mission which cost the lives of the entire crew. He was born in Phillip Street and educated at All Saints School. Before joining the Services he was employed as a driver by Messrs Dicksons, seed merchants.
